Narrative about the effective teacher that was chosen by me

The teacher that I chose was one that I met last year. In this text, I will focus on some characteristics: Enthusiasm, Homework and Monitoring student progress. The first point is going to be a positive and the other two are about topics he would be more effective in teaching.

He was a middle-aged man and very informed about what was happening at his city and the country. Joining this, he was funny and let all the students confortable in his classroom, which was especially useful at that time, since almost all the students did not know each other and were from different places.

At the beginning of the course, the teacher made all of us present ourselves and then join to a partner for the first activity. The influence of the teacher and his enthusiasm was very important, since he seemed to be interested in what the textbook brought and about its context in the real world. He always asked for our opinion and our real life experiences about the book content, and this was a great incentive for us to keep talking and interacting.

Although this good relation in classes and theses classes were very good and productive, this teacher was not effective with homework and monitoring student progress. This became clear to me when I perceived that students of other classrooms had homework. I did not ask if it happened because my classroom was at the highest level of English, but I think it would not be a problem. In fact, he was more interested in making us knowing each other and the city. In my perception, he really believed that we would learn more about this language using it in real life.

About monitoring progress, he did not provide a lot of individual feedback for students, which could be a tool for our development.       He called me once, and then said that my interaction was very nice and I did not have much Brazilian accent. I appreciated this, but in my opinion, constant feedbacks in every class would be more effective for my learning process.

Taking this in consideration, I still think that this teacher was one of my favorite ones, because he made us live the English language and culture. And, unfortunately, this kind of method of teaching is not common in our routine, especially in public education, which makes learning a second language a difficult and expensive process.
